Slumdog Millionaire

What comes to your mind when you think of a low budget? A poor movie with bad acting and terrible graphics I'm guessing? Well my point of view changed when I watched Slumdog Millionaire. This movie changed my perspective on low budget movies and has taught me not to judge a movie by its cover. Well enough of that, and more about this movie.
So the movie starts out with 18 year old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) on the show Who wants to be a Millionaire?. In which he just one question away from winning the grand prize. The host expects him of cheating and he hires these goons to torture and interrogate him to see if he cheated. When he keeps telling them that he didn't they don't believe him and just keep questioning him. Through the movie it shows flashbacks of his childhood in the slums with his brother Salim (Madhur Mittal) and his mother. His mother later dies in the Bombay Riots and they are left orphans. Soon after the riots Jamal and Salim meet a girl named Latika (Freida Pinto). Jamal and Latika become friends but Salim does not like it. They are camping when a gangster named Maman and takes them in to beg on the streets. When Jamal and Salim figure out that Maman has been blinding kids to make more profit and they escape on a train leaving Latika behind. After years of barely making a living when they go look for Latika and find that Maman is selling a Latika for prostitution. Salim pulls a gun and tells him to hand over his money and Latika. After Maman does so Salim kills Maman. When they get back to the motel Salim goes out and

The Simpsons Movie

I'm sure I don't need to explain about The Simpsons. A show about a family that has been playing now for 22 years straight, now that is a long time in television. In fact, that is so long, it has been classified as the longest running animated show in history. Then on July 26, 2007, Matt Groening (producer of The Simpsons) took his successful show to a whole new level. With that I'm going to talk about The Simpsons Movie.
So the movie starts out with the band Green Day preforming on Lake Springfield. However, the pollution of the lake causes their stage raft to sink. The next day the church holds a funeral for Green Day, when Grampa has a vision about the future doom of Springfield. After church Homer does chores around the house such as getting rid of a bee hive and fixing the roof. Bart and Homer try to have fun by daring each other to do things, but Homer takes it a little to far when he dares Bart to skateboard across the town naked. Bart gets in trouble for it and doesn't think his dad cares about him. After Homer adopts a pig, Bart gets a little help from Ned Flanders and they become friends. Marge asks about where he is putting the pig's leavings and Homer shows her the silo in the backyard labeled Pig Crap. Homer goes to get rid of the silo when he gets in a hurry and carelessly dumps the silo into the lake, polluting the lake more than its ever been. The EPA finds out and Russ Cargill (head of the EPA) goes to President Schwarzenegger for help. Cargill gives him five different options and, without reading them, Schwarzenegger picks number three. Soon Springfield is being sealed in a giant glass dome. The townspeople realize that it was Homer who dumped the Pig Crap silo and they go to kill him and his family. They escape through a sinkhole and go to Alaska. Later Cargill gives another order to bomb Springfield making sure no one knows about it. The Simpsons find out about the plan and go to rescue Springfield, but Homer disagrees and Marge and the kids leave him. With the help of an Inuit shaman Homer realizes that it is his duty to help Springfield. Meanwhile Marge and the kids are discovered by Russ and are captured then put back into the dome. Soon Homer climbs the dome and goes down the rope holding the bomb. He gets a motorcycle and, with the help of Bart, goes up the dome and they throw the bomb out the hole just before it explodes. They meet up with Russ who is about to kill him when Maggie drops a rock on his head, knocking him out. Homer and Bart are treated as heroes by the townspeople they all help rebuild the town back to normal.
So thats The Simpsons Movie and it is one of my most favorite movies. It had great animation and great comedy. Now for the rating, I give a 4.5 out of 5. Right now as I'm righting this review I'm suprised that Matt Groening could make such a great show and also make just as great of a movie.

The Graduate

Like most teenagers, graduating is what they look forward to. They think it would be awesome to be alone in the city barely ever coming home. Well then after they graduate from there, what will they do next? Will they go straight to work, will they stay with their parents for a while? This is a similar story about a man that is worried about his future. This movie is called The Graduate.
The movie starts out with Benjamin Braddok (Dustin Hoffman) graduating out of college. He doesn't know what to do next so he is confused. Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) congragulates him and asks him if he could drive her home. Ben does what she says and drives her home. Upon reaching her home she asks him to walk her in so she is safe. When they get in the house he says he'll leave when she tells him to stay and as time goes on Ben relizes that Mrs. Robinson is trying to seduce him. He goes home and tries to avoid her until he feels he has to do it. He calls her up and they get a room together at a hotel. After that he usually spends the rest of his time floating in his pool or renting a room with Mrs. Robinson. His parents organize a date for him and the Robinson's daughter Elaine Robinson (Katherine Ross). Mrs. Robinson is outraged and doesn't speak with Ben. He takes her to a strip club to make her hate him but finds her crying. He apologizes and says that his parents and her dad set the date up. She forgives him and they go get burgers and connect. One day ,when Ben goes to Elaine's house, Mrs. Robinson tells him that if he goes out with Elaine again she will tell Elaine about their affair. Sadly, Ben says he'll have to tell her himself. Elaine and Mr. Robinson won't speak to Ben and Elaine goes back to UC Berkley. Ben tells his parents that hes going to marry Elaine and when they are about to call up the Robinsons Ben says that Elaine doesn't even know yet. Ben goes to UC Berkley and stalks her. Later she finally gives in and says she loves him but her parents hates him so it would never work out. She is also engaged with her classmate Carl Smith (Brian Avery). Ben runs to the wedding and when Carl and Elaine are about to kiss, he starts shouting her name. She shouts his name and they run through the crowd and they jam the outside doors with a cross. They hitch a bus and drive away.
This film was interesting yet funny. I also like the Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack they used for this movie. Now for the rating, I give it a 4 out of 5 for the songs ,the acting ,and the comedy. The one thing that was truly great about this movie was that it introduced Dustin Hoffman. His acting in this movie really shot up his popularity and made people know him as The Graduate.

Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock, what can I say besides I'm not surprised they nicknamed him "The Master of Suspense." He constantly made you think "Oh that person is the killer!" Then at the end of the show you say to yourself "Well I feel stupid it was that person all along.". Today I'm going to talk about one of the more memborable pictures of all time. I'm of course talking about Psycho. This movie is the mother of all slasher films, Halloween, Friday the 13th, they all owe it to this ingenious masterpiece.
The movie starts out with a troubled relationship between Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) and her boyfriend Sam Loomis (John Gavin). Marion then steals $40,000 from her employer to marry Sam. On her way to Sam, its starts to rain. She pulls over to rest for the night. In the morning, she is woken up by a suspicious police officer tapping on her window. He asks her why she is sleeping in her car. She just tells him that she was tired and pulled over to rest, then the officer takes off but follows her. She then trades her car in for a new one and drives to Bates Motel for the night. A man named Norman Bates gives her room Number one and tells her he will go to his house and take down sandwiches for both of them. Marion hears him and his mother getting in a fight and he comes back. Marion apologizes if she made them fight but he said it was not her fault. He explains to her that ever since his father died, his mother was not the same. Marion gets nervous when he asks her what she was doing around here alone and she goes to bed. Norman gets suspicious and goes up to his house. When Marion is taking a shower a female figure comes in and stabs her to death. the figure goes back up to the Bate's house. Norman finds her then cleans up and dumps her and her car into a swamp. Marion's sister Lila Crane (Vera Miles) and Sam get worried and search for her and the money. They ask these people around the area of the motel about anywhere where Marion could have stayed over night. they say that she could have stayed at Bates Motel. They ask them if it was the one owned by a man and his mother. They reply that the man's mother has been dead for more that ten years. they go to the motel and pretend to get a room. then Sam distracts Norman while Lila goes up to his house. Norman eventually relizes whats going on and knocks Sam out. Lila goes down into the cellar and finds Mrs. Bates facing away from her she walks up to the unreponsive woman and turns the chair around. Mrs. Bates was infact a corpse. Lila screamed when Norman comes in wearing his mother's clothing holding a knife but Sam comes in and grabs Norman. They find out that he murdered his mother, father, and Marion but tried to cover up his mother's death by stealing the corpse and talked in his mother's voice. They put him in the asylum where he is thinking in his mother's voice

It's sad when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son, but I couldn't allow them to believe that I would commit murder. They'll put him away now, as I should have years ago. He was always bad, and in the end, he intended to tell them I killed those girls and that man, as if I could do anything except just sit and stare, like one of his stuffed birds. Well, they know I can't even move a finger, and I won't. I'll just sit here and be quiet, just in case they do suspect me. They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am. I'm not even gonna swat that fly. I hope they are watching. They'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, "Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly."
Psycho was a suspenseful picture full of twists and turns. I give it a 5 out of 5 because it was a unique and nice touch at the end. The only thing I regret was hearing all of the parodies and spoilers to the movie.

Citizen Kane

The famous 1941 film Citizen Kane is known as the number one critic's choice of all time. People talked about it, T.V. shows parodied the famous opening such as The Simpsons' fifth season episode simply titled Rosebud. This movie shows that the most loved thing in a person's life may not be a living thing but a beloved object from a period of time.
The film starts out showing a No Trespassing sign outside of the Xanadu (Kanes private estate)It closes in on the elderly Kane lying in bed holding a snowglobe. With his dying breath he utters "Rosebud.." and lets go of the snowglobe letting the audience know that Kane had died. A reporter named Jerry Thompson hears what Kane's last word was and tries to find out it's meaning. Later a flashback shows Kane at his youth playing in the snow with his sled when he is told he will be taken away from his home by Walter Parks Thatcher to be educated. The director of the movie Orson Welles (who became famous for his 1938 radio broadcast War of the Worlds) also starred as the main character Charles Foster Kane, a unhappy billionare. He married two times and had one son. Unfortunately, Kane's only son dies in a motor accident with Kane's wife. When his second wife left him he got outraged and tore apart her room. He got to a snowglobe and picked it up, walking out of the room with tears in his eyes he muttered "Rosebud..." and passed by all of his shocked workers slowly. When the flashback of that scene fades out it shows Kane's butler telling Jerry that was the one of the two times he heared him say Rosebud, the other time including Kane's last word. They finally give and say that maybe Rosebud was something he did not gain in life. At the end of the movie, in the basement of the Xanadu, people were throwing Kane's belongings into the furnace. They got to Kane's sled and threw it into the flames. The light eluminated the words on the sled which wrote out Rosebud.
If I would not have heard the ending over and over I would have been surprised. This movie was a timeless classic showing that money indeed cannot buy happiness. I am going to give this movie a 4.5 out of 5. The reason for that rating is that the movie was sort of boring. After watching this film I am not surprised that Citizen Kane is the number one critic's choice.

Gone With the Wind

In 1939, Victor Fleming filmed a movie starring Clark Gable and 1939's Academy Award winner for best actress Vivien Leigh based off a 1936 novel. That film would soon become one of the most famous pictures of all time, and that movie was known as Gone With the Wind. This war slash romance movie had a great plot with just as great effects, acting, quotes, and actors. This movie is excellent at showing its work on researching the history and the technology they had back in the 1860's to the 1870's. The Technicolor did it's job in making the color intensely vivid adding a nice bright touch to the movie.
This movie takes place during the infamous Civil War. Vivien Leigh stars as the young pampered Scarlet O'Hara who is deeply in love with Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Soon Ashley joins the Confederate Army along with all the other able men. Later Scarlett leaves Atlanta burning to the ground with Melaine and Prissy to go to her hometown Tara guided by Rhett Butler. Later she marries Rhett and have her first daughter Bonnie. Sadly, Bonnie later dies the same way as her grandfather, falling off a horse. with nothing left worth while, Rhett leaves the city Tara alone, when Scarlett tries to stop him he says on of the greatest quotes in cinematic history "Frankly my dear, I don't give damn."
As much as I like this movie I have to say that this film excedes it's limit in drama. Scarlett's character shows a bright young woman, but she is such a pampered spoiled brat. She constantly whines and she marries men for their money and also to make Ashley jealous. Secondly I think this movie could have been shorter than it is. Now for the rating, in all I will give it a 4 out of 5 stars. This movie is a classic and it will be for years to come.
